What makes the wines of the valleys around Stellenbosch so special? The answer lies in the region’s rich winemaking heritage, diverse terroir and favourable climate.
The Stellenbosch Winelands are globally recognised as the heartland of South African wine. Wine has been produced here since the mid-17th century, and the region is home to a remarkable mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries. Together, they produce outstanding examples of many of the world’s most celebrated grape varieties.
One of Stellenbosch’s greatest strengths is its diverse terroir. The region’s mountains and rolling hills create varied growing conditions, while vineyards can reach elevations of up to 250 m above sea level. These differences in elevation, aspect and location contribute to the distinctive character of wines from across the Stellenbosch Winelands.
The region also has an extraordinary variety of soils, with as many as 50 different soil types. These include decomposed granite in the mountain vineyards and alluvial soils over clay bases in the valleys. Many of these soils provide excellent drainage while retaining enough water to support healthy vine growth.
Stellenbosch’s Mediterranean climate is another important factor in its winemaking success. Average temperatures reach around 16.4°C, while summer temperatures can rise into the mid-to-high 20s. The maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean, together with the prevailing south-easterly winds, helps moderate summer temperatures and provides relief for the vineyards. These cooling breezes also help reduce disease pressure.
This combination of soil, elevation and climate makes Stellenbosch well suited to a wide range of grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon is the region’s dominant planting, while Pinotage, Merlot and Shiraz are also widely cultivated. In vineyards closer to False Bay, cooler conditions favour varieties such as Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc.
